The Plan

I'm a Girl Scout Troop leader called to be the Activity Days Leader for the 8 and 9 year old girls.

I want Activity Days to have purpose and substance. I want to make a difference in these 10 girls' lives and not just babysit them.

I'm creating our activities around the women in the scriptures and tying this in with the Faith in God requirements. I'm relying heavily on the blog Women in the Scriptures. For ideas I'm using several of the field trips I've done with my Girl Scouts.

We meet twice a month. The general outline is to learn about one women from the New Testament and one women from the Old Testament every month. Once a month we meet at a leader's house and once a month we go out! Our activities are an hour and half.

June  Hagar - hike  Learning and Living the Gospel (5) Give an opening and a closing prayer in family home evening or at Primary. Share your feelings about how prayer protects us and helps us to stay close to Heavenly Father and the Savior.
10 Virgins - making oil lamps out of clay, wicks and oil. They actually work!  Developing Talents (4) Make an item from wood, metal, fabric, or other material, or draw, paint, or sculpt a piece of art. Display your finished work for others to see.

Aug  Developing Talents (5) Visit an art museum or attend a concert, play, or other cultural event. Share your experience with your family or activity day group.

Oct   Ruth & Naomi - Serving Others (2) making cards and writing letters. Write a letter to a teacher, your parents, or your grandparents telling them what you appreciate and respect about them.

Oct  Biblical Mystery Dinner
Nov  Anna - making temple crafts. Please bring your scriptures. Mark these verses about the Holy Ghost in your scriptures: John 14:16–17, 2 Nephi 32:5, and Moroni 10:5. Discuss ways the Holy Ghost helps you.

I picked Trader Joes because 1) they are awesome to local scout groups and 2) they are a store known for being health(ier) and I thought it was a good tie-in to the Word of Wisdom. We met at Trader Joes 15 minutes before I had scheduled the tour. This worked perfectly: some girls showed up 5 minutes late (10 minutes before the tour) a few just a bit after that, and the last girl showed up right as we were starting our tour. 15 minutes early works great! Women and Girls of Tyre - Learning and Living the Gospel (4)

Read a recent conference address given by the prophet. Decide what you can do to follow the prophet, and do it. - Learning and Living the Gospel (4) This lesson was part two of Learning and Living the Gospel (4). It worked out so well! We met at the beach at 6pm. The beach was windy and FREEZING. It would have been such a lovely day to be at the beach three hours earlier, but oh well. We sat on a giant beach towel and huddled under blankets. We did our opening stuffs and I gave my lesson: Women and Girls of Tyre Let’s all start by saying the sixth Article of Faith together: We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth. Naamah - Developing Talents (3)

Write a poem, story, or short play that teaches a principle of the gospel or is about Heavenly Father’s creations.   - Developing Talents #3 We met at our local animal shelter. I had arranged beforehand with them to give the girls a tour and a short lesson. I'd done this exact trip before, with Girl Scouts, and it was a hit. With Girl Scouts they asked to collect toilet paper tubes and bring them in for a service project where we stuffed each roll with hay for bunnies. In anticipation of that, I asked the Activity Day girls to collect and bring toilet paper tubes.   I asked the parents to have the girls at the front doors at 10am sharp. Hahaha! What was I thinking? Definitely tell them to be there 15 minutes before the tour starts. Then when people are 15 minutes late it's ok.  In fact, I think I would switch the schedule around.
