The Mother of Samson - Learning and Living the Gospel #7

Read D&C 89. Discuss how Heavenly Father blesses us when we faithfully live the Word of Wisdom. Help plan and conduct an activity to teach the Word of Wisdom to others. - Learning and Living The Gospel #7 I called up Trader Joes about a month in advance and asked if we could come take a tour of their store. I picked Trader Joes because 1) they are awesome to local scout groups and 2) they are a store known for being health(ier) and I thought it was a good tie-in to the Word of Wisdom. We met at Trader Joes 15 minutes before I had scheduled the tour. This worked perfectly: some girls showed up 5 minutes late (10 minutes before the tour) a few just a bit after that, and the last girl showed up right as we were starting our tour. 15 minutes early works great! The tour was delightful. We got to go in the freezer (-10 degrees!) and see the cardboard crusher , we met the staff and learned about some history. We talked about healthy food (fruits and vegetables) and food that should

Women and Girls of Tyre - Learning and Living the Gospel (4)

Read a recent conference address given by the prophet. Decide what you can do to follow the prophet, and do it. - Learning and Living the Gospel (4) This lesson was part two of Learning and Living the Gospel (4). It worked out so well! We met at the beach at 6pm. The beach was windy and FREEZING. It would have been such a lovely day to be at the beach three hours earlier, but oh well. We sat on a giant beach towel and huddled under blankets. We did our opening stuffs and I gave my lesson: Women and Girls of Tyre Let’s all start by saying the sixth Article of Faith together: We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth. What does that mean? When Christ was alive on the earth he set up His church, and His church is organized the same way today. Just like today, members of the church lived all over. Do you guys have family members that are members of the church of

The Widow of Zarephath - Learning and Living the Gospel (4)

Read a recent conference address given by the prophet. Decide what you can do to follow the prophet, and do it. -  Learning and Living the Gospel (4) This lesson was to get us ready for General Conference! We met at my house. I had a big area set up with chairs in a circle and then a table with chairs. Our group is getting a little small (all our girls are turning 10!) so we invited the older group to join us. I wanted more for people to play the games. Any number of girls can play, I thought it would be more fun with more girls. We did our opening stuff and I gave my lesson: Widow of Zarapeth  Back in the days when wicked queen Jezebel ruled Israel there was a woman who lived in the same city as wicked Queen Jezelebal. This woman was not a Jew, and was not born in the covenant, but she loved God and tried to always do what was right. She married and had a son. Jezebel was so wicked that God sent a drought: There was no rain. Not a single drop of rain. All the rivers, c

Tabitha - Food Bank - Serving Others (1)

Read and discuss the parable of the good Samaritan (see Luke 10:30–37). Plan and complete a service project that helps a family member or neighbor. After completing the project, discuss how it helped your faith grow stronger.  - Serving Others (1) This activity started back in January. At our last activity in January, I announced we would be doing our big service project of the year (this is a new thing I am starting). I introduced the Faith in God requirement, and asked them to read the parable of the Good Samaritan and to really get in to this service project. Before, I had contacted our local food bank, asked for a tour, and set up a digital food drive. The food bank made a webpage with a link our Activity Days girls could give out, where people could go online and click which food items they wanted to donate. The website gives them a total cost and the people pay the cost with a credit card, never having to search through their pantry, or go to the store, yet still helping out

Naamah - Developing Talents (3)

Write a poem, story, or short play that teaches a principle of the gospel or is about Heavenly Father’s creations.   - Developing Talents #3 We met at our local animal shelter. I had arranged beforehand with them to give the girls a tour and a short lesson. I'd done this exact trip before, with Girl Scouts, and it was a hit. With Girl Scouts they asked to collect toilet paper tubes and bring them in for a service project where we stuffed each roll with hay for bunnies. In anticipation of that, I asked the Activity Day girls to collect and bring toilet paper tubes.   I asked the parents to have the girls at the front doors at 10am sharp. Hahaha! What was I thinking? Definitely tell them to be there 15 minutes before the tour starts. Then when people are 15 minutes late it's ok.  In fact, I think I would switch the schedule around. We did the tour first, then did the usual Activity Day stuff with prayers, songs and the lesson. I think it would work better to meet at the place 3

Priscilla and Eliza R Snow

I need a co-leader! My wonderful partner was released from her calling, much to my dismay. Sadly, I'm having a really hard time getting it together without her. Our planned activity was Eliza R Snow: The plan was to learn about her, her poetry and her songs, and dived into 2-4 groups. We would then have an adult take each group outside into a forest and every group would be under a tree 5-15 feet away form another group. All the girls would have flashlights. One group turn on their flashlights and point it up at the branches of their tree. They would then sing one of the hymns she composed (O My Father  - The Time is Far Spent - Awake, Ye Saints of God, Awake! - Though Deepening Trials) and then turn of their flashlights. At that point, another group would turn on their flashlights and sing a different song an so on. I asked the parents to be there so I could have enough adults, alas, that afternoon I still had no volunteers. Not feeling good about having 10 young girls alone i

Make an item from wood, metal, fabric, or other material, or draw, paint, or sculpt a piece of art. Display your finished work for others to see. - Developing Talents #4 In September I sent out the schedule for the rest of the year to the parents. On that schedule, we were supposed to meet twice in December. The Relief Society Christmas Party was announced in November to be on the day we had scheduled Activity Days, so we cancelled the first activity. The second one was scheduled too close to Christmas so most of the girls would be gone. December scheduling is always really crazy! We ended up meeting once on the only night in December the majority of the girls were free. Maybe two activities in December is too ambitious. We met at a leader's house with the Sister MIssionaries. After our opening stuffs the Sister Missionaries showed us the Light the World video for 2017 and we talked about the program. That lead beautifully into making our own light- Ice Candles! Here is a tu
